Pre-Departure
Twenty-four pilgrims will be making their way east tomorrow. Not the Far East, but the Mid East.
The news today says the peace process is challenged by the reaction of Hamas to this past weekend's killing of nine Palestinians by Israeli troops in Gaza.
An Israeli spokesperson reasons that such action is necessary to reduce the number of attacks against Israelis.
Two peoples live in a land called Palestine and/or Israel. Two peoples claim a right to that land.
During my five-week stay in Jerusalem last summer, I found a bumper sticker with comic strip images of two donkeys tied together with one rope. Like a tug of war, each beast was pulling away on the rope just out of reach of a bale of hay on each end. The final strip pictured a resolution to the conflict as the donkeys were munching on the same bale together, still bound by the same rope.
Tomorrow we will make the journey to the land that is called Holy, ending in the Holy City of Jerusalem, rooted in the Hebrew word for peace. In Arabic it is called
Al Quds, "the Holy City."
We ask for God's blessing on us, on the land, and on the people of the land, that Palestine/Israel indeed may be shared, may be a haven for the holy, and may be a haven for peace.
