Where's Pastor Tim?
Sabbatical 2006 Information
What will Pastor Tim do?
The Lilly Foundation has provided a grant for Clergy Renewal for Christ the King
to enable Pastor Keyl to take a journey of a lifetime, and also provided money for pastoral
leadership and congregational renewal during the sabbatical.
The sabbatical dates are June 18 through September 18, 2006, the summer season. Our Sunday eucharist
during this time will be at 9:00 am.
The Mutual Ministry Committee has helped Pastor Tim plan for his Sabbaitcal and write the proposal
for the grant that has enabled him to "Dream Big". Mutual Ministry is the group that provides
support and feedback for pastoral ministry as it intersects with CtK's entire ministry.
The members of the Mutual Ministry committee are: Dennis St. Lawrence, Linnea Hallee, Eirik Esp,
Kathy Philion, Jana Holst (council liaison), and Karen Ruder.
TANTUR INSTITUTE
July 2-30, 2006
"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
in the wilderness"
(Luke 4:1).
Pastors Kari and Tim are enrolling together in a four-week program for clergy that is
called the Tantur Institute for Ecumenical Studies based in Jerusalem.
Deirdra Schmidt, our worldwide traveler, spent time there with her family in 1979.
You can read more about Tantur on the web at: www.come.to/tantur.
June 18-25, while currently filled of ministry responsibilities, Pastor Tim will begin to empty
himself into the wilderness experience by packing and saying my goodbyes.
June 25-July 1, Pastor Tim and family will fly to Palestine prior to the start of the Tantur program
to further empty himself from his ministry responsibilities and begin acclimation to another culture,
time zone, and climate. He will take this time to explore and introduce himself to colleagues in the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land.
"Now during those days [Jesus] sent out to the mountain to pray"
(Luke 6:12a)
Christ the King has made many connections to the global church, including support for a member
who taught English at a Lutheran School in Slovakia, providing tuition for Liberian school
students, and being the lead congregation for the annual CROP Walk. Christ the King has also
been instrumental in establishing the New Hampshire Interfaith Youth Council, bridging relationships
between Jews, Muslims, and Christians. In the summer of 2003, Christ the King was instrumental in
hosting a Palestinian Lutheran Youth who accompanied our youth to a National Gathering in Atlanta,
Georgia. This brought flesh and bones to our "companion" relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, which we have supported by sending school supplies, advocating for
the Augusta Victoria Hospital, and remembering them in constant prayer. Through the program at the
Tantur Ecumenical Institute, Pastor Tim will encounter the "living stones" that are the people of
faith in Palestine/Israel. He will see first hand the current context for those who struggle
to claim Jerusalem as the Holy City for people of three faiths, and make lasting relationships
with Lutherans he visits, other students in the program, and others who form the fabric of
life in the Eastern and Western Churches. Tantur's four-week program balances learning,
excursions, and time alone to explore, reflect, and study. It also includes worship with members
of that ecumenical community living, and eating together.
In the days prior to the beginning of the program at the Tantur Institute and on weekends, Tim
will acquaint himself with Lutheran congregations in Palestine and exchange gifts and greetings
from Christ the King.
HOLDEN VILLAGE
August 6-27, 2006
The second leg of the Sabbatical will take place in Holden Village, a Lutheran Retreat Center in a
remote area in central Washington, by Lake Chelan, in the Cascade Mountains. CtK's own Colin Campbell
has been to Holden, and loved it! In April during Sunday Adult Forums, our guest, Wendell Beckman,
will provide slides of his own experiences at Holden Village last summer.
"Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up
on the mountain to pray"
(Luke 9:28)
As Jesus took with him his closest disciples to encounter God, Pastor Tim plans to spend time apart
with his family in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. At Holden Village, in its dedication to
living in community, daily prayer, and justice keeping, a three-week stay will serve to provide
rest and refreshment, and the time to reflect on his experiences in the Holy Land.
Holden's model of communal life, attention to the creation, and daily prayer will surely spill
over into new ways of understanding congregational life and ministry together. Set within a
remote former copper mining village, there is no phone or e-mail to provide distraction. We have
experienced some of the flavor of Holden Village at Christ the King when we participate in the
service of "Holden Evening Prayers".
The Keyl family will be taking in all the summer offerings at the retreat center, recreating in
the environment, and book reading. Pastor Tim plans to compile a description of life at Holden
to share with the congregation, and to propose models from Holden that might mutually enrich
the spiritual life of pastor and congregation.
